What is Regenerative Medicine?

Category: Blog

Regenerative medicine involves the process of replacing or regenerating human cells and tissues to repair injuries and/or restore normal function. Damaged tissue is either replaced or healed by stimulating the body’s own repair mechanisms to heal itself. The field of regenerative medicine is rapidly growing. Here at PM&R Associates, we offer treatments in stem cell therapy and Platelet Rich Plasma. Check out more information on each cutting-edge regenerative medicine treatment below.

Stem Cell Therapy

Stem cell therapy focuses on delivering stem cells to parts of the body that are in need. Adipose tissue (fat cells) or stem cells taken from bone marrow are removed from the patient’s own body. The tissue is made into a stem cell concentrate and injected at the focal point where treatment is needed in the patient’s body. Once the stem cell concentrate has entered the treatment site, the regeneration process begins.  The stem cells work by repairing and healing the damaged cells such as spinal discs and cartilage in the joints.  This results in healing, reduction of inflammation, and restoration of function. At PM&R Associates we offer stem cell injection treatments for both disc pain and joint pain. Anyone with a degenerated joint or painful spinal disc is a candidate for stem cell therapy. As opposed to having to do a surgical infusion or replacement surgery, stem cell therapy offers a less invasive option.

Platelet Rich Plasma

Platelet rich plasma (PRP), or platelet concentrates have been studied extensively since the 1990s. While similar products previously used in medicine (fibrin glue) were very expensive, PRP provided a cost-effective alternative. Plasma concentrates are a way to help the body finish the healing process and strengthen the weakened tissue. PRP treatment works best for chronic ligament, tendon sprains/strains, joints, and discs that have failed other conservative treatment. PRP injections can be performed in tendons, joints, discs and lligaments all over the body. Sports injuries, arthritic joints, lower back, degenerative disc disease and more specific injuries including tennis elbow, carpal tunnel syndrome, ACL tears, shin splints, rotator cuff tears, plantar fasciitis and iliotibial band syndrome may all be effectively treated with PRP.

PM&R Associates provides both traditional and cutting-edge regenerative medicine treatments for a wide variety of spine, muscle, tendon, ligament and joint conditions. Cutting edge treatments include the use of platelet rich plasma (PRP) and stem cell therapy, using cells derived from your body’s own fatty tissue or bone marrow, to facilitate your body to heal itself.
